Getting paid and payment reminders
Updated October 18, 2026
Clients pay you the way your invoice tells them to. When a payment arrives, record it on the invoice so your totals, the client's page and your reports stay accurate.
Record a payment
- Open the unpaid invoice and find Record a payment. The amount starts at what's due now.
- Change the amount if needed, or select Full balance (or Deposit, while a deposit is due). Enter the date it was paid and, optionally, how.
- Select Record payment (Record payment in full when it covers the balance).
Recording a payment doesn't email your client. To remove a payment recorded by mistake, select × beside it. On a paid invoice, Mark as unpaid removes every payment. Once an invoice is paid, your client's PDF button becomes Receipt.
Automatic reminders
Owners and admins turn on Overdue invoice reminders under Settings → Automatic emails. They're off by default. Once on, the first reminder goes the morning after an invoice's due date, then every 7 days, up to 3 times. You can change the interval (1 to 60 days) and the number of reminders (up to 10).
- Invoices that are already overdue when you turn reminders on get their first reminder the next morning.
- Reminders go out in the morning, Eastern time, and ask for the amount still owed.
- They go only to clients with an email address, never within a day of sending the invoice, and never for invoices without a due date.
- Each invoice shows when its next reminder will go, or that reminders are off.
- Imported invoices get no reminders until you select Create a link on them.
Card payments
Card payments through Stripe aren't open to businesses yet. For now, enter your payment instructions under Settings → Invoices → How clients pay you, and record payments as they arrive.
See what's owed
The top of Invoices shows what's outstanding, what's overdue, what you received in the last 30 days, and how many drafts you have. Filter the list by status (drafts, unpaid, overdue, paid or void), or search by client or invoice number. Each client's page also shows what they owe you.
